Elysium: Plot Revealed

District 9 director Neil Blomkamp has been working on his next film project for over two years now, and he’s done a hell of a good job keeping the story details under wraps for so long. Today the shroud has been lifted, and a plot synopsis has been revealed, so finally we know what his second feature film is going to be about!

Up until this point all we’ve know is that the movie is a sic-fi thriller that take place about about a hundred years in the future, Matt Damon plays main character, and Jodie Foster is the head of an offworld state. It also stars Sharlto CopleyWagner MouraWilliam FichtnerSonia Braga, and Diego Luna

The following story synopsis was found on an invite to a preview screening of the film by Collider, here it is….

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Here’s what producer Simon Kinberg had to say about the film in an Interview…

It’s a very different movie than anything you’ve ever seen before. It’s not necessarily an alien movie… It’s a unique movie. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. And I will say, where I would be daunted because of District 9 being this masterpiece Neill is so talented as a writer and as a director that I’m kind of fearless going into this movie.

The movie is scheduled to be released on March 1st, 2013, and it sounds like its going to be a great second film for the director! Now that you know what the story for the movie is… what do you think? Do you think Blomkamp will deliver a second round of awesomeness?
